Ramachandra Guha is an award-winning historian of Indian democracy, the biographer of Mahatma Gandhi and a scholar of environmentalism. As a public intellectual and columnist, he reaches 20 million readers in 10 languages. His latest book is "Gandhi, The Years that Changed the World: 1914–1948." Gandhi is known as a freedom fighter, social reformer and proponent of interfaith harmony. These aspects of his life and legacy are well-known and have been widely commented upon. In this lecture, however, Guha will draw attention to his environmental ideas, which are little-known and imperfectly understood. Based on a close study of what Gandhi did (and did not) say, Guha will analyze the significance of his legacy as an environmental thinker.
