Have you ever wondered what it would be like to be President or a Cabinet officer making a major decision that will change the course of history? Here is your chance.
In partnership with the Truman Presidential Library’s White House Decision Center, we are pleased to offer incoming high school sophomores, juniors and seniors an opportunity to join us on the ASU Tempe campus on Saturday, August 3, 2019.

The program will challenge students to step into the roles of President Truman and his advisors to tackle the historic decision of how and when to end the war with Japan. Student participants will choose which cabinet role they would like to play in the simulation.
Students will gain skills in
- Close reading and information gathering
- Primary source analysis
- Comparing and contrasting multiple points of view
- Synthesizing complex information
- Group cooperation and communication
- Speech writing and public speaking
- Crafting evidence-based solutions for a complex problem
Two academies will be held on Saturday, August 3, 2019 from 8:00am – 12pm and 1pm – 5pm on the ASU Tempe campus. Depending on availability, you will be assigned to one of the two sessions. The fee to attend is $50, which is subsidized by funding from Arizona Public Service, the Apgar Foundation and community donors to the ASU Political History and Leadership program. There are a limited number of scholarships available if you have a financial hardship.

You will receive a workbook and required forms via snail mail in advance of the academy. Please complete the workbook before you attend, and bring both the completed workbook and signed form with you on August 3.
The format of the academy is groups of eight playing the roles of President Truman, cabinet officer or policy expert deciding whether to use atomic weapons, and if so, which cities to target. Participants are provided with now declassified memoranda seen only by each official at the meeting. Following each group meeting, a mock press conference will be held with the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. A continental breakfast will be provided at morning session and light snacks for the afternoon session.
