Join graduate students enrolled in HST 643 Global History for a Zoom discussion of High-Tech Housewives with author Amy Bhatt.
About this event
High-Tech Housewives reveals how transnational migrants create lives that are not geographically bound but shaped by politics, policies, and imaginaries of migration and settlement. Indian IT workers at companies like Google and Microsoft are examined as modern “techno-braceros.” Bhatt discusses how the women who follow their partners to the US are legally barred from working and relegated as caretakers and non-income generators. She argues that their unpaid and gendered labor allows the household to produce workers able to meet the needs of late capitalism.
