The School of Historical, Philosophical, and Religious Studies (SHPRS) at Arizona State University invites applications for a full-time, benefits-eligible Assistant Teaching Professor position beginning August 16, 2024. This is a fixed-term, academic year (nine-month) appointment with no tenure implications. Subsequent annual renewal is possible contingent upon satisfactory performance, availability of resources, and the needs of the university. This full-time, benefits-eligible career-track position includes a path to promotion to Associate Teaching Professor and Full Teaching Professor. Areas of Specialization/Competence: Some area of Applied Ethics, such as bioethics or business ethics. The successful candidate will be responsible for developing and teaching undergraduate courses in applied ethics (a 4/4 load), including bioethics and business ethics. The preferred candidate will also be able help us relieve enrollment pressure in other areas, such as environmental ethics, philosophy of science, and introductory logic. These courses will be taught online and in-person with the majority of the load online. In addition to teaching, responsibilities will include supervising teaching assistants and graders. This person will also serve the school, college and university in capacities appropriate for the position. Candidates who are non-US citizens must have current authorization to work in the United States.

The School of Historical, Philosophical, and Religious Studies (SHPRS) at Arizona State University (ASU) is pleased to invite applications for a full-time, 12-month (fiscal-year), benefits eligible, career-track (non-tenure-eligible) faculty member at the rank of Assistant Teaching Professor with a focus on the Second World War and Holocaust & Genocide studies. The anticipated start date for this position is August 1, 2024. This hire will contribute to the program needs of ASU’s innovative online World War II Studies program, created in partnership with the National World War II Museum in New Orleans, Louisiana. This is a teaching and service position within the History faculty of SHPRS with a starting salary of $80,000. The fiscal year is July 1 through June 30. As the appointment will begin on August 1, 2024, the salary between August 1, 2024 and June 30, 2025 will be prorated. The position is based at ASU’s main Tempe Campus. Residence in Arizona is required. Subsequent annual renewal is desired, contingent upon satisfactory performance, availability of resources, and the needs of the university. The position includes a path to promotion to Associate and Full Teaching Professor.

The School seeks applicants committed to outstanding teaching, student-centeredness, and service in the program. The successful candidate will primarily teach and serve in the online educational offerings associated with the School’s World War II Studies program. These offerings include a Master’s degree in World War II Studies, a graduate certificate in Holocaust & Genocide studies, and a suite of non-credit continuing education courses. Candidates who are non-US citizens must have current authorization to work in the United States.

The position’s primary duties include:

  • Together with other program faculty, the successful candidate will:
  • Coordinate with scholars from the National World War II Museum and ASU faculty and staff to improve and expand course offerings in the MA, graduate certificate, and continuing education programs
  • Teach foundational and capstone courses in the World War II Studies MA and the graduate certificate in Holocaust & Genocide studies
  • In collaboration with the Museum and ASU faculty and staff, participate in admissions, program planning, and curricular revision
  • Take on service in unit or college committees, task forces, and other institutional and organizational bodies
  • Engage with the scholarship of online teaching and learning to ensure the production of high-quality educational experiences that align with best practices

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Doctoral degree in History or a related field with an emphasis on the histories of World War II and their cultural implications by time of appointment
  • Evidence of successful teaching at the university level
  • Demonstrated commitment to working with faculty, staff, students, and communities to advance the principles of the ASU Charter

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience teaching in an online environment
  • Ability to teach the history of World War II from an interdisciplinary and global perspective
  • Ability to explore diverse experiences during World War II

The anticipated start date for this position is August 1, 2024. This hire will contribute to the program needs of the top-ranked online History MA program. This is a full-time, benefits-eligible, 12-month fiscal-year position with a starting annual salary of $80,000. The fiscal year is July 1 through June 30. As the appointment will begin on August 1, 2024, the salary between August 1, 2024 and June 30, 2025 will be prorated. Subsequent annual renewal is desired, contingent upon satisfactory performance, availability of resources, and the needs of the university. This career-track position includes a path to promotion at the levels of Associate Teaching Professor and Full Teaching Professor. The position is housed within the History faculty on the Tempe campus and residence in Arizona is required. Career-track faculty participate in faculty governance and have access to a variety of career development and funding opportunities within the SHPRS and across the university.

The School seeks applicants committed to outstanding online teaching and effective program administration. The two areas of expertise (20th century U.S. and Public History) reflect separate teaching needs and the successful candidate need not teach or research in both fields. The position’s teaching obligations consist primarily of online, asynchronous graduate courses such as historical methods, research seminars, and electives in the candidate’s area of expertise. The initial teaching load is seven courses per year over 12 months (Fall, Spring, and Summer semesters). Additional functions include mentoring History MA students and supporting the program’s administration and curriculum development. Candidates who are non-US citizens must have current authorization to work in the United States.
